Now for one more try. I have started and changed and stopped this blog so many times, that I can't remember its precise history. Which is good because it doesn't really matter. What matters is that after giving up blogging a year or so ago, I feel compelled to try it again.

My question is why? Why blog? I mean what is the point? It's not like millions, or thousands, or even hundreds of people will read and be influenced by this blog. I learned in previous incarnations of this blog. In those previous incarnations, my goal was not only to change the world, but to make lots of money in the process. I suppose it might be possible to do one or the other, maybe even both, but only if you have readers. And frankly, neither the power of my words, nor the depth and clarity of my thoughts are good enough to inspire that degree of readership or loyalty.

So why bother? I am no Shakespeare, nor am I a Darwin or even a Kant, but I do have things to say. Perhaps that gets to the point of blogging and other forms of social media. It is primarily just a means of self-expression, a way of getting it out of your system.

In past efforts to blog, I thought it important to have a theme for my blog. The importance of that seemed obvious because all the books on blogging said so. Usually the theme I aimed for had something to do with humanism and how to make the world a better place. I believe that to be important. The problem is that my intellectual abilities did not seem up to the task, and anyway, I found it hard to stick to the theme. So this time I will solve that problem by having no theme except myself. I will write about that which I feel the need to write about. It will be interesting if any natural theme develops from this approach. We will see in a few years.

So why bother blogging? Here are four possible reasons
  • To express myself
  • To motivate myself to think more deeply about subjects
  • To motivate myself to learn about subjects
  • It's something to do
