President Obama's Pragmatism

I like President Obama. I voted for him twice, and I would vote for him again if I could. We are lucky to have him as President. If he (or Al Gore) had been President in 2011, we would have fought one war, not two. The President is indeed a progressive, a liberal, but he is a very pragmatic one. That is what I like most about him. He knows he cannot snap his fingers to get whatever he wants, so he does not try. Instead, he knows he has to work with people, and he has to look into his political crystal ball to distinguish what is possible from what he would ideally wish for. Then he goes and seeks what is possible.

That is the difference between a great, pragmatic president and the rest of us. A president has to answer to the whole country whereas the rest of us have to answer merely to ourselves or in the case of members of Congress to a small constituency. There is a difference when you have the actual duty and responsibility of doing stuff and when you only have to talk about stuff. It is easy to criticize President Obama, or any other president, when you are not responsible for taking the executive action. After all, if anything goes wrong, it is he will get most of the blame.

John McCain can talk until he is blue in the face about how we should go to war against this country or that country. Talk is easy. President Obama has the actual responsibility for he lives of the men and women he sends to war, as well as the man civilians who could also die.

Anyone can talk. Talk is easy and cheap.

Let's be happy and glad we have a president who also listens and thinks before acting.

The human mind is inspired enough when it comes to inventing horrors; it is when it tries to invent a heaven that it shows itself cloddish. -Evelyn Waugh, novelist (1903-1966)
