There is no healthier activity than plain old walking. Sure, walking is not cool like running, but it is easier on your knees and hips. If you’re out of shape or overweight, walking is the least stressful way to start any exercise plan. Walking will not turn you into an iron man or iron woman, but it will help you to feel like one. Whereas running can easily cause you to quickly become sore, walking can do that too, but with walking the soreness is easier to avoid simply by starting slow. It takes longer to go where you are going with walking, but it’s as healthy, maybe more so, as running because it puts less stress on the body.
Walking is something you can do almost anywhere. You can walk in a mall; you can walk back and forth in your home; you can walk down the street in front of your home; you can drive to a park and walk, and you can walk inside an office building, up and down the stairs, or a parking garage.
If you walk inside your house, you will see things you never noticed before. If you walk inside a mall or an office, you may meet new people. If you walk outside your house or in a park, you might see birds, animals—and my favorite— reptiles. If you’re lucky, you may on an occasion get caught in a rainy downpour, then get to tell everyone how you were caught in a rainy downpour. If you walk early enough or late enough, you might see Venus or the Moon. If you’re in a park, you might get to hear a coyote howl or even see one play. Who knows, if you keep a sharp eye, you might even see an owl.
Walking does not require great intellectual abilities, but it is beneficial—so I’ve read—to intellectual abilities. Walking will not make you an athletic superstar, but it is among the first steps to becoming an athletic superstar. Walking will help you live longer, and it will help you enjoy those years more. Unfortunately, walking will not earn you more money, but it might save you on medical expenses.
And your dog will love you for it.
