Republican Anti-Poor Attitudes

Have you ever believed something so strongly that it was almost impossible to understand how those who disagree with you could possibly disagree? I'm that way with Republicans and conservatives; how can they disagree with me? However, judging from all the strange talk that goes on at FOX news, they must feel the same way about liberals and myself.

So it is that I do not understand the reluctance to help others that seems to be displayed by the Republican Party and the conservatives who support them. They actually seem to think that what I might consider their heartless beliefs is a type of tough love. Do conservatives consider the poor and especially the homeless as needing a firm hand to force them to do the right things? Do conservatives who have achieved some wealth, or even a little bit of stability, believe that since they have done it, everyone should be able to do it? Such beliefs, if that is what they believe, can be understood. The line between success and failure is thin and involves a lot of luck that goes unrecognized. We do not recognize the luck that we have had, so we assume it is our skills that get us ahead. By ignoring the luck that we’ve had, we make ourselves seem more capable than we really are.

I've never been poor, but except for some luck, I very easily could have been. In my case, I have parents who are always happy to have me come back home and live in my old childhood room and charge me no rent, nor anything for the food I eat. I've been laid-off several times, so I've had to do this on several occasions. Anyway, I'm lucky to have parents who will let me live with them, so I've never lost money while unemployed; I've even managed to save money. But what if that had not been the case? Not only would I've not saved money, I would have spent all the money in my retirement and probably be sleeping in some very low priced, loud, apartment complex.

I'm a big believer in luck. Luck has a lot to do with how much wealth you have. Luck has a lot to do with your attitudes toward savings and frugalness. Luck decides who your parents are. The single most important luck in your life is who raised you. Even if you are poor you might feel very lucky to have your parents and care very much for them, but if they were poor, then you're starting out much lower, economically, which increases your changes of staying poor as an adult. Poverty is not just a question of hard work. Most of the poor work very hard and learn to work hard at an early age. Poverty is about having money and having a strong enough support net that allows you to make the mistakes that most people do and not fall into a poverty trap.

So do poor people deserve to be helped? I feel everyone deserves to be helped, the poor, the middle class and even the rich if they need it. So yes, they do deserve it.

Whatever the causes of poverty, you have to be pretty daffy to believe that anyone wants to be poor. The poor do not choose to be poor. Usually, they are born that way and never learn any other way to be. They do not have the money to invest that might allow them to get out of poverty. Sure, some people manage to get out of poverty and become rich, and yes, they worked hard to do that (but perhaps no harder than they would have if they remained poor), but they also got really lucky.

I do not buy the conservative idea that the poor must be pushed to work their selves out of poverty (is that what conservatives think?). What the poor really need is for the rest of us to invest in them.

Consider This:

Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed. -Herman Melville, novelist and poet (1819-1891)
