What is the one thing that matters most? What is the single most important thing in the world? What is the single best thing that could do the most to heal the world and end wars and violence? What one thing could change you and make you a better person and do it in the fastest possible way? What is the most selfish thing you can do to help yourself (which as a byproduct is the best thing you can do to help this world to be better in almost every way)?

Your answer will depend on your ideology and religion. Many will answer that faith in their God by more people would change everything for the better. Many more will answer that love is the cure for the world's problems? Some will answer friendship or hope or even greater self-esteem. The economically minded might answer more respect for private property and capitalism. Some who focus on rights will argue for a more complete set of recognized human rights.

All these things can help by bringing about cooperation. But they are problematic as a cure all. Changing faith from one religion to another can bring changes to a society, but has any religion, any, ever made a society a better place? It is difficult to see they have; instead, they simply changed the focus and reasons for violence. What about love, friendship, hope or self-esteem? These are nice to have, but they only lead to a better world within the narrow scope of your own small world. You can be a loving person to those who are your family or who are like you in most ways, but hate others who are different. Respect for property rights and capitalism is similar. You can demand them for yourself and the society you live in without any desire to give it to others outside your group. Last on our list are human rights. What you think should be a human right and who should receive it is determined by your beliefs. Your idea of human rights might be different from mine. The whole topic of human rights is important, but the subject is very philosophical and is a result of our beliefs rather than the cause of those beliefs.

So what is the one thing that can pull all this together and cause a change in your personal life and your own society, as well as for the world?

I will make a bold statement. The single most important need for humanity is compassion. If our civilization survives for tens of thousands of more years, it will be because we learned to have compassion. Compassion is the secret and the foundation of all wisdom. No amount of learning or study or wealth can redeem for a lack of compassion. Compassion, in an instant, can turn a fool into a wise man.

Compassion matters.
