The politically right always seems to come up with good slogans. Perhaps it's because I live in Texas, but many of these slogans I could think of without much effort:

"Right to Life"

"Christian Nation"

"God and Country"

"Right to Work"

"Government is the problem"

"Vote Democrat: It's easier than working"

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people"

"Best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun"

It's harder to find good liberal slogans. Even though I'm proud to be a liberal, I could think of only one slogan that resonates in the same way the right-wing slogans do. I went to Café Press to find all but two of these:

"Actually, guns do kill people"

"I'll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one."

"I'm not Anti-Republican, I'm just Anti-Stupid"

"Taxes Are the Price We Pay to Live in a Civilized Society"

"Better a bleeding heart than none at all"

"A job should lift workers out of poverty, not keep them in it"

"Evolution is kind of a theory…Just like gravity"

Most of the right-wing slogans I was able to come up with without searching the internet. Only one of them did I find on Café Press. None of the liberal slogans, except for the first one, "Pro-choice" and the last one "Freethinker" did I come up with on my own. They others came from Café Press. And except for the term "Pro-Choice," I cannot think of any other liberal slogan that resonates in political debates like the right-wing slogans do.

Why is that?

Maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough. Maybe there are many great liberal slogans, but they are so ingrain in me I'm unconscious of them. Please feel free to leave a comment reminding me of all the great left-wing slogans.

My own suspicion is most left-wing thinkers think much deeper than right-wing thinkers do. The right is always talking about commonsense solutions, that might be because they don't like thinking deeply about problems. They are not so much concern with finding the best solution that will really work, as they are with finding a solution that makes them feel good. The feeling that something is common sense, after all, comes with being familiar with an idea, not because the idea is true or the best way to do something. So this gives the right an edge at coming up with feel good slogans.

More likely it is just different ways of thinking about problems. People on the right want their circles to be perfectly round, while the people on the left are okay if the circle is a little wavy. People on the right want the answers to problems to make sense on the surface, people on the left want to look deeper. So the right finds it much easier to put their ideas in a slogan, where the liberals, being all nuanced in their thinking, find it harder.

Regardless of the reason, liberals need to find better slogans that resonate in political debate. And while it might be true that slogans do not give real answers, they do provide a foot in the door so liberal ideas will be heard.
