In my article on compassion a made the case that nothing was more important than compassion. I'm not completely stepping back on that. I still think compassion is pretty high on the list of important things. But this does deserve more thought. Compassion is important, but maybe not the most important thing.

What could be more important than compassion? I'm think our need for security and our need to feel important. It's easy to talk the importance of compassion or love or friendship, but when we get down to the earthy need to live our lives, we need security and we want to feel good about ourselves. By security I simply mean the assurance that we will have the things necessary to live our lives without suffering. By feeling good about ourselves I mean just that, feeling important or special (everyone wants this).

There are two broad strategies we can use to achieve our security and self-importance, force or compassion. Perhaps the most widespread strategy for achieving security and self-importance is force. An example of this is when one army tries to crush another army to make it do what the first army wants. A less used method for achieving security is compassion.

I believe what I was trying to say in my previous article is that we need to find ways to bring about security and self-importance by using compassion, not security. Making a transition from a strategy of force to compassion may be the most important thing we need to do now to secure our future.
