Letting Low Income get Sick to make a Political Point

I do not believe the poor or any low income person wants to be poor. It is very counter intuitive to think they would. Yet, there are those who become so impatient with the poor for continuing to be poor, that you might think they thought the poor were taunting them, that the poor stayed poor just to get under their skin. The poor could, at any moment, get a great job and become middle class, but just to bother them, the poor deliberately stayed poor. How dare they.

I'm talking about those politicians, there's too many to name them all, but normally their name come after a title like "Republican." I don't really believe they think the poor want to be poor. Yet, they seem to clearly think that the poor do not have to be poor if only they, the poor, would get out there and work hard. These politicians have little regard for those with small income. And they have little desire to help them, even though the United States has always helped its citizens to succeed.

I know this because I live in Texas. Texas, if you have money or a good family to help you, is not a bad place. Unless you are poor. Texas does not care for their low income people. I learned this recently because I became eligible for Affordable Care Health Insurance. (I left my job.) The Affordable Care system will allow me to get good insurance for about $10 a month, with the subsidies. Now if were not eligible for the subsidies, I would have to pay almost $500 a month.

I believe health care is a basic need that the government and our fellow citizens should help everyone to get. So I'm happy to take it. But here's what bothers me. To be eligible for the subsidies I have to make right around $11,500 a year. I'll do that because I have savings that have not been taxed. That's a minimum income I must have to get the subsidies. Anyone who makes less than that, those who really, really need the help, get no insurance, unless they can somehow afford to pay $400 or $500 a month. Of course they are poor, so they can't. Instead, if they get sick they will either die or the county will have to pay a ton in emergency care.

This is not President Obama's fault. He remembered the poor and had a plan for them. The states would get special Medicaid Expansion funds from the federal government. President Obama had it setup where the states had to take the Medicaid Expansion funds which would provide care for low income. The Republicans sued all the way to the Supreme Court so they would not have to take the money that the Federal Government was giving them. The Supreme Court sided with the Republicans.

Many Republican controlled states decided not to take the Medicaid Expansion funds and not provide insurance for their poor, low income citizens. States like Texas.

The Republican controlled Texas Government, Rick Perry was governor, chose not to take the government funds, and allow their low income citizens to go without insurance just to make a political point.

I find that disgusting. But yet somehow Republicans win elections.
