Maybe It Won't Be So Bad

Honestly, I don't get it.

It's clear to me that I do not understand my country. Well, at least half of the country. I was born and raised here in the United States, as were my parents and their parents and theirs, back to the revolutionary war. We've been here for a long time. Yet, clearly, large sections and populations in this country are much different from me. I could be exaggerating the difference between myself and my fellow Americans, but at the moment it does not seem like I am.

I do not feel I am representative of my country.

How could so many people vote for Donald Trump? He does not seem like a good man; he seems unlikeable. I'm not sure he's that smart either. He does not seem to know anything about policies, nor much about issues. Nor did he seem to understand how our government works. He does not seem to care about other people. His depth of knowledge about world events seems lacking. Nor do I get the impression he has any ideas on how to solve our country's problems, here at home or abroad. As an individual, he seems shallow.

Trump does seem to have a very, very big ego. That is not necessarily a bad thing for a president, but his ego seems to be as fragile as it is big, and that is a bad thing. He seems like someone who is keeping score, perhaps keeping a list of preserved enemies. He seems to be someone who might need to get even with people. Granted these are perceptions, but they are perceptions I have of him that half of the country does not.

My perceptions of Hilary Clinton are basically the opposite of those I have of Donald Trump. I see Hilary as being a nice lady. She seems very smart. I think she knows a lot about policies and issues and has a deep understanding of how our government works. I thought she displayed genuine concern for other people and their needs. She certainly knows what is going on in the world, having been the Secretary of State for four years. And she seems to have given deep thought to how to solve our problems.

Hilary, I think, also has a pretty big ego, although I don't think it is as big as Trumps, nor as fragile. She seems willing to work with others no matter how they treated her in the past. I do not get the feeling she needs to even the score with those who are working against her. I don't think she has the need to punish people who opposed her.

I must admit, I perceive both of these people differently, maybe very differently, than many of my fellow citizens. I find that interesting.

There is one ray of hope.

In the primaries, I thought he was a joke who could never win.

During the general campaign, I thought he was a joke who could never win.

Now I fear he will be a joke as a president.

Perhaps, I will be wrong for a third time.

Good luck, Donald.

Do you mind if I sit back a little? Because your breath is very bad. Donald Trump
