Voters -- Why They Vote as They Do

The whole world, including Donald Trump himself, was shocked when Trump won the presidential election. What a shocker. I'm still getting over it.

I keep asking myself, how did that happen?

I mean really, how did it happen. Hilary Clinton lead in almost every poll for the entire campaign. I thought Donald looked as if he knew he was going to get defeated. Everyone knew he was going to get beat. So why didn't he lose.

Trump managed a terrible campaign. He fired his managers. He insulted people. He had no real polices. He came across as a racist and a womanizer. Yet, he still won. Hilary on the other hand, managed a very good campaign and knew what she was talking about. I thought she was very likable. Yet, she lost.

Here's the explanation: Most voters, even those who actually vote, do not care about politics, and they do not pay much attention to political news. And what that means is they judge political parties and candidates by very general perceptions they have from reading headlines, from commercials, late night jokes, and comments from friends. I believe this may be the golden rule of politics. Most people just are not interested in politics.

I suppose that should be obvious, but for those whose job it is to report politics or those of us who enjoy listening to that reporting, it is so easy to forget that most people, most normal people, just don't care. They have real lives to lead.

Meaning, all the decent people who voted for Trump, probably just were not paying close attention. This is what I would like to believe.

But why did so many hapless voters flock to Donald Trump, why not flock to Hilary Clinton? Was it the email controversy? Partly, the republicans did a great job building it up, making it seem far worse than it really was. But Trump said and did things some would consider much worse, racist and sexist things. Yet he staged a dramatic win over Hilary.

These hapless voters see politics through a fuzzy, foggy lens. They vote based not on values, or ideology, or experience, or capability but on something more specific, a desire for change. Many voters, vote simply for something that is different. If one party does not seem to be doing so good, they vote for the other party. It's that simple.

Trump did not win because he ran a better campaign, because he did not, or because he is the better candidate, he is not; he won simply because he is different.
