Have you noticed how fun Donald Trump talks? Not the way he pronounces words, but the way he uses words. He uses a lot of adjectives and adverbs. He uses words like: sad, terrible, tremendous, wonderful, total, pathetic, great, big, amazing. To his credit in my brief review of his tweets, he did not use the word "awesome."

He also has a very convincing way of overstating every promise his makes, as if he completely believes the promise will come true simply because he said it would. He makes a promise as if it is already true, even though it has not happened yet, and then repeats the promise with the promise that the results will be better than anything imaginable. I convinced he believes, totally, in his own hubris.

So, what's up with this? Trump, it seems, believes in the magic of words and certainty, and in this he has lots in common with evangelical Christians who support him. Now I do not believe Trump is an evangelical, I don't think he even cares about Christianity, much less is an actual Christian. But I do believe that he believes that if he says something with enough conviction and belief it will happen. He believes in the awesome power of positive thinking (although, as I said, I did not find any examples of him using the world "awesome").

Positive thinking is not a bad thing, it is certainly better than being negative all the time. But it is just an attitude, and Donald is about to find that any magic it has is small magic: limited to how it makes us feel and perhaps how it makes those around us feel. It will not make our already great nation, great in the way Donald wants it to be.
