Have you considered why liberals are liberal and conservatives are conservative?

What drives a person to be one or the other or in-between. I am sure liberals seem naive to conservatives, but to liberals, conservatives seem to be heartless and unloving. It is a wonder, at least to me, a liberal, that so many conservative Christians claiming to believe in a loving and giving God can be so mean and cruel. I say this not to provoke, but to point out the divide. I'm sure those Christians do not see themselves that way. Perhaps they only expect others to be responsible, and that I, by coddling the less well to do, I'm encouraging them not to take responsibility for their lives.

The conservative Republican Party has made it clear they do not want to give health care to those who cannot afford it on their own. They want to repel it. They say they want to replace it with something better, but in my heart, I believe what they really want to do is get rid of it. This would mean tens of millions of Americans will not be able to afford health care. They seem to think this a pretty good idea. I don't. Yet, I don't view them as evil people, but the result of their health bill would be pure evil for many people.

Because I believe in social welfare, it's easy for me to point a wiggly finger at conservatives. It's hard not to. But what I want to highlight in this article, is that they want one kind of society, whereas I, and others, want something much different. What makes them reject health care and other social programs aimed to help those with less while I think it's a great idea?

These are the kinds of questions I like to consider. Questions that get to the fundamental bottom of why we are like we are. I'm not sure I have The answer, but I do have A answer. The answer has to do with empathy, but not in the way you might suspect. Conservatives have empathy, just like liberals. The difference between the two groups is in who they believe deserves our empathy.

Here's a few questions for you:
  • Of the people you have known who you believe deserved to be helped
  • Think of other people who you believe did not deserve to be helped
  • Ask yourself why you believed one person deserved help while not the other
  • How can you be so sure your reasons are correct?
  • Was it the way the person acted?
  • Was it the way the person looked?
  • Did the person seem lazy?
  • Did the person not seem to be trying very hard?
  • Did you not like the person?

When you judge someone as not deserving empathy or to be helped, chances are you have reasons. You infer stuff about the other people, and you make a judgement. Everyone does this. We must be safe. We have to judge people and size them up.

But you can never know as much about a person as you imagine you do. If a person seems lazy and not to try that may be the way they are. Maybe they are lazy or they don't try. What you don't see, what you can't see, is why they are like that. It is good to remember this eternal truth: No one wants to be a failure. The homeless, the poor, and those with illnesses are not trying to be failures, if that is what you view them as. They want good lives too, but they don't know how or they lack the emotional strength to have great lives.

Everyone needs help in life. In fact, we always, all of us, need help. Sometimes we need a lot of help, and sometimes we need much less, but we always need some. Many people don't get that help, or the help is of poor quality. This is especially harmful when they do not get it when they are children. Success is not something you can simply decide to have. It takes resources, emotional resiliency, learned skills, good luck, and help.

Who deserves our help?

Everyone does.
